In the fall of 2005, everything came together to make Rock Prairie's Memorial Garden a reality. The months of planning and preparation turned into several productive workdays. We now have a garden spot with a brick cross, walkways, plants, and trees.
Over 1100 spring flowering bulbs were planted, along with several trees and bushes. The congregation at large participated with their generous donations, and by ordering engraved bricks to be placed in a large cross, the focal point of the garden.
In the spring of 2006, the engraved bricks were installed, benches and planters were placed, flowers, shrubs and a few more trees were be planted. Annuals were also be placed to augment the perennials.
This is an on-going project, for as plants mature there will be dividing to do as well as replacing annuals each year. There is even room for expansion of the garden itself and also room for more engraved bricks in the cross.
Thank you to all who participated by planning, digging, planting, silent auction, donations, purchasing bricks, quilting, cooking, and every other area that made this vision a wonderful addition to Rock Prairie Church.
The Memorial Garden Committee remained quite busy during the 2006 year. A great number of annuals were planted in late Spring. In mid summer, sod was laid around the cross. During the summer and early fall the garden was tended by several committee members who weeded and watered to ensure that the plants survived the heat and the drought. Also during the summer a gazebo was donated and built. We hope that people will use it for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc., (whatever is appropriate) or for just sitting and enjoying the garden.
In late fall the annuals were removed and the perennials were prepared for winter. Due to the lateness of the arrival of the second order of bricks and the need to do some reworking of the cross, the additional bricks have not been added. This will take place in the spring of 2007 when the time is appropriate.
The committee wishes to thank all those that have donated time, talent, plants and materials to make this project one of beauty and inspiration to the congregation and visitors of Rock Prairie.
Anyone who likes to garden is invited to donate their time as this project is in need of on-going assistance and dedication. We cannot just plant it and forget it. New and replacement plants will be required as well as continued maintenance. If you would like to participate in this labor of love, please talk to one of the Memorial Garden Committee members.
Again, thank you to all for your continued support. Memorial Garden Committee
